For the uninitiated, Kamala Khan was a huge fan of Captain Marvel who assumed the mantle of Ms. Marvel from Carol Danvers when Danvers herself became Captain Marvel in the comic series, with this likely being slightly re-worked to fit the in-game universe. But Crystal Dynamics head of studio Scot Amos and Crystal Dynamics narrative designer Hannah McLeod recently spoke about Captain Marvel’s role in the great Avengers universe.

While Amos did not outright confirm her presence, he stated that “Kamala can’t be a fan of someone who didn’t exist.” Even if Captain Marvel’s initial presence is slim-to-none, this is confirmation that she exists in the in-game Avengers universe to some degree. Mcleod went a little deeper by explaining that “Kamala still writes fan fiction. She still knows everything there is to know about the Avengers and yes, Captain Marvel is still her favorite. That is something she and our players have in common. They love these heroes.”

It seems unlikely that Captain Marvel features a role in the story, but the very idea that she exists and has inspired Ms. Marvel shows the unique dedication Crystal Dynamics has to telling a thoroughbred Avengers story. In all likelihood, the most likely scenario would seemingly be that Captain Marvel could be one of Marvel’s Avengers free DLC characters.

However, there’s simply no telling how Crystal Dynamics intends to include Captain Marvel in-game, but the very fact that she exists lore-wise will be homage enough for many. If she does prove to be DLC for Marvel’s Avengers, it would be interesting for Avengers co-op players to play Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel together, but only time will tell if that’s a plausible scenario.

Marvel’s Avengers releases May 15, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
